New Output Style and Connection File

A customized output style for the journal, Bovine Practitioner has been developed by our Veterinary Sciences Librarian, Andrea Dinkelman and myself and has been uploaded as a customized style into ISU’s EndNote Web site. It should be noted that this file has been customized for the reference types of books, journal articles, and generic. If you are using it and have references in the conference proceedings, book section, or other format types additional customization may be required. Also, this style uses journal abbreviation rather than the full journal title, so some customization of the individual references may also be required.

I have also uploaded an updated connection file for searching for books and materials within the ISU Library Catalog into EndNote Web.

I hope to add this customized output style to the EndNote LibGuide for EndNote users soon.

More about this add-on

This add-on is a plugin for the research sources management tool Zotero, which is also a Firefox extension. The add-on automatically fetches number of citations of sources from Google Scholar and makes it possible to sort your sources by citations. Moreover, it allows batch updating of citations as they may change over time.
Currently, Zotero doesn't have any special field for the number of citations, that's why it is stored in the field "Call Number". To sort by this field you have to add it in the source listing table.

Academic reference management software for researchers | Mendeley

Couldn't remember how to spell this the other day for my workshop and thought I had mentioned it in my blog.... So to make sure I can find it when I need it.

This is a really good (free!) tool for indexing and getting the bibliographic information from PDF's. Zotero can do this as well with some configuration.

Haven't really used either recently to compare... but will put it on my list of things to do.

The big one in this update is the ability to use CWYW with references in shared groups, in my opinion...

EndNote Web release includes the following improvements:

Cite While You Write with references in shared groups

Transfer up to 5,000 records to EndNote

New Japanese interface

Continued performance improvements

Improved formatting for records with certain extended characters

Improved administrative access for consortia site administrators.

A hands-on workshop covering the basics of EndNote Web is scheduled for Monday, February 22nd at 10 am in Room 134 of the Parks Library.

The workshop will cover creating an account, getting references into EndNote Web and creating bibliographies.

To register you can enroll under HRS Training within AccessPlus, look for Workshop -- EndNote Web.

The workshop will be repeated in March and April, but the dates for these have not been finalized.

EndNote Web -- Sharing

One of the features with EndNote Web is the ability to share references with others -- specifically by providing the e-mail address of the people you wish to share references. To do this you go to the Manage My Groups under the Organize tab within EndNote Web. There is a button entitled Manage Sharing, click this and enter the e-mail addresses of the people you wish to share the group of references with...You also need to determine whether you wish to provide read only or read write access to your group of references. Then click apply and close the window. .

Even though you have entered the e-mail addresses, you need to click on the share box next to the "Manage Sharing" button. Unless you click on this button, you will not be sharing the library. You can tell by the little people icon next to the group indicating it is being shared. This icon also shows up next to the group under the My References tab.

So be sure that this icon is displayed on the group or you will not be sharing the group.

The use of bibliographic management software and its internal search interfaces is now pervasive among researchers. This study compares the results between searches conducted in academic databases' search interfaces versus the EndNote search interface. The results show mixed search reliability, depending on the database and type of search performed.

I have had a number of queries about people who have had trouble creating EndNote Web accounts especially from off campus. This seems to be a problem related to authenticating the account holder as a member of the university community.

There are two possible solutions

(1) set-up the account from on campus - once you do this you can access it and use it from anywhere, or

(2) create an account for EndNote Web by accessing the Web of Knowledge or Web of Science database from off campus -- you will need to authenticate (logon with your library id and pin number) to get access to this database -- then you can register for a Web of Science account which will also allow you to use EndNote Web.

Instructions and a related video for this second method are available on the EndNote Web research guide (http://instr.iastate.libguides.com/endnoteweb). This video starts at the Web of Science page, so it excludes the process of logging in and authenticating,

Not sure about this since it doesn't really help in the citing of web pages, but often times you would want to preserve the web page of a cite you are referencing. I know of a similar tool but I cannot recall the name right now -- I think I have it listed on my personal blog (http://lib-quide.blogspot.com/) so I will try and remember to pull it up...HSM

Ebsco Problem with EndNote Web

There is a problem with Ebsco databases and EndNote Web. Its not a real problem as the workaround works great but its not obvious. So.....

When you go to export references there are a number of options one of which is Direct Export to EndNote Web....

DO NOT USE THIS OPTION!!!!!!

Use the Direct Export to EndNote, ProCite, CITAVI, or Reference Manager

This will allow for automatic importing into EndNote Web provided you have installed the CWYW Word Plugin.

Recent Query -- Sharing Resources

EndNote has the ability to sync or share your references between the computer with the EndNote software (version x or higher) with EndNote Web. EndNote Web has the ability to allow you to share your references with others -- via e-mail accounts with either the ability to read or read write. In the read only mode, invited users (by their e-mail address) can view the shared groups (libraries) references.

I received the following query -- Dr. is sharing resources via EndNote Web. Is there a way to copy / transfer those shared refs down to my EndNote client. I can do that with the ones called “my references” but don’t see a way to do it with shared ones.

There are two ways to do this --

1. In endnote web you can mark the shared references and then copy them (add to group) into a group (library) within your endnote web account. You may want to create a new group before moving.

2. You can export the shared references down to your computer in either the ris format or the endnote library format and then manually import them into your endnote library (if you use the ris format – import using the ris filter & if you export with the endnote library filter – use the endnote import not the endnote library import)

My recommendation would be to copy the wanted references from the shared group into your groups and then use the automatic sync feature between EndNote and Endnote web.

What is CiteULike?

CiteULike is a free service to help you to store, organise and share the scholarly papers you are reading. When you see a paper on the web that interests you, you can click one button and have it added to your personal library. CiteULike automatically extracts the citation details, so there's no need to type them in yourself. It all works from within your web browser so there's no need to install any software. Because your library is stored on the server, you can access it from any computer with an Internet connection.

Why is it "social"?

You can share your library with others, and find out who is reading the same papers as you. In turn, this can help you discover literature which is relevant to your field but you may not have known about. The more people who use CiteULike, and the more they use it, the better it becomes as a resource. You can help with this process just by using CiteULike and through the invite a friend feature.
